Step By Step
He’s on the couch Legs wide, as usual The TV remote in his hand The other tucked behind his head I drop onto him sideways Just to annoy him My bare thigh revealed As my nightgown rides up “You’re not wearing anything under that.” He says It’s not a question Just an observation The hem has bunched Around my hips And I tug it down Half-heartedly I should move Away from him But I don’t “You always do this” He says But It’s an accusation without conviction “Do what?” I stretch My arms Above my head Fabric tightening across my chest Hem climbing further up my thigh And nudging his ribs with my elbow “You’re just mad that I’m cooler than you” He snorts “You wish” “I don’t have to wish” I twist onto my back My head landing in his lap “You’re just tense from another hard day...” I sigh contentedly Like I’m settling into a pillow “...of doing absolutely nothing” “I was relaxed” He mutters “Before your naked ass showed up” “It’s not naked” I pause “…technically” The TV plays some mindless action movie I reach for the popcorn bowl on the coffee table Grabbing a kernel and tossing it into the air It lands in my cleavage I look up at him Holding eye contact As I fish it out and eat it He groans “Seriously?” “What?” “You’re disgusting…” “Then stop staring” “I’m not staring” He protests Trying to buck me off With his hips “Jesus. You’re so annoying.” “Thanks” I flick another popcorn kernel This time at his face And it bounces off his chest He pokes my ribs I squeal Turning around Rolling onto my side And kicking his shin He grabs my ankle And We look at each other Silently This is the moment My ankle In his grip My nightgown Floating His hand tightens And I don’t pull away Then he spreads me Softly With wonder My nakedness Revealed As my legs Fall open Under his touch

Acorn, please your poetry is some of your best writing. The book is really good. That along with Read Receipts, different but still excellent.
